Khruangbin - Mordechai Remixes [PRE-ORDER]

Khruangbin - Mordechai Remixes [PRE-ORDER]

Release Date: 10/29/2021

"The dancer wants to get in a groove and stay there until he has exhausted his invention or his body. The timescale and momentum of any physical activity is vastly different from the attention span of listening."

Albert Goldman "A good remix is when the remixer's sonic fingerprint is present, without sounding forced. It should feel like it's own story, with at least some of the same characters as the original." Khruangbin The art of the remix has been around for several decades, from the fervid imaginations of JA pioneers like Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid or King Tubby to the disco enthusiasts of New York, such as Tom Moulton, who bequeathed us the modern iteration of the remix and provided a template from which most remixers still work. Moulton's first commercial remix, a reworking of BT Express' appropriately-named 'Do It 'Till You're Satisfied', which stretched it from three minutes to a luxurious five, assisted the band in securing it's first Billboard R&B Number One, as well as providing a pathway for remixers like Walter Gibbons, Larry Levan, Richie Rivera and Tee Scott, to completely reinvent the concept of a remix (and in some instances, deconstructing the idea of what comprised a song). It has subsequently been used as a marketing tool, a dancefloor-devastator, a gimmick (both cheap and expensive) or even as a way of reaching a different audience (think Tori Amos' 'Professional Widow'). Khruangbin are no slouches when it comes to the remix themselves. They've been reworked before, in 2016, with the highly collectible EP on Boogiefuturo. But this time, they're taking it a step further with an album dedicated to the art. Entering the tight-knit world of a Khruangbin song can be a little daunting. They have created this entire universe in which the trio seem to function telepathically in the way the music is composed, arranged and played. To mess with their delicate eco-system can invoke feelings similar to that of an unwanted guest crashing a good-time party. "We write our music to be interpreted; this is another wonderful interpretation of the music," reassure Khruangbin. "There is something very vulnerable about letting others work on your music. But through the correspondence with the different artists, we gained a bigger connection to the songs themselves." The choice of remixers for this album is neither arbitrary nor accidental. They're not names picked randomly out of a hat or chosen via a throw of the dice. All have some connection to the band, sometimes personal friendships, musical connections, or simply mutual musical appreciation. Harvey Sutherland and Ginger Roots have both toured with the band, Kadhja Bonet and Ron Trent had their own mutual fan club going on, Knxwledge sampled 'White Gloves' on a recent mixtape, Natasha Diggs and Soul Clap's Eli's are recent buddy-ups, Quantic is a mutual friend of Bonobo (crucial in the KB origin story), while I've known Laura for number of years; plus she is also godmother to one of Felix Dickinson's kids. Doesn't get much more intimate than that, right? Some of these remixes were specifically made so you can dance your ass off while getting down to the Khruangbin sound, while some might better be appreciated horizontally with headphones on, wearing fashionably loose clothes. The choice is yours. But all were made with love and respect for Khruangbin. "A good remix deconstructs, recontextualizes, or simply extends a good time," say the band. Amen and out. Bill Brewster

Vinyl LP pressing. Paradise is The Mattson 2's second release on Chaz Bear's (fka Chaz Bundick, aka Toro y Moi) Company Records, and first without Bear as a member of the band. The identical twins, Jared (guitars) and Jonathan (drums), have left their trademark virtuosity on display; within the 32-minute runtime they've managed to capture the arc of an entire relationship between two people. It's the first album they've written and recorded in their home, which is a wooden cabin in the hills of San Diego. You can hear the sun in the keyboards, in the 80s-inflected jazz. The singing is new, too. They've been playing shows for 15 years without any vocals; on Paradise, though, the twins have added their voices to the mix, which adds a welcome new human dimension to the record.

Roky Erickson - The Evil One

Roky Erickson - The Evil One

Regular price $ 48.00
/

Celebrating a creative purple patch by a singular performer, Light In The Attic is to reissue the three albums issued by Roky Erickson in the 1980s: _The Evil One_ (LITA 097), _Don't Slander Me_ (LITA 098) and _Gremlins Have Pictures_ (LITA 099). Together, they're a chance to pick up a missing jigsaw piece in the history of American rock 'n' roll in deluxe packages.

As the core member of the 13th Floor Elevators and an undisputed pioneer of psychedelic rock, the '60s were thrilling times for Erickson. His band riding high in their native Texas and beyond, the howling single 'You're Gonna Miss Me' was his calling card, but Erickson's '60s ended in the stuff of nightmares. Under sharp scrutiny by the authorities due to the band's well-expounded fondness for psychedelic drugs, Erickson was found with a single joint on his person. Pleading not guilty by reason of insanity to avoid prison, he was sent to the Rusk State Hospital for the criminally insane, where he was 'treated' with electroconvulsive therapy and Thorazine treatment. Erickson pulled through his three and a half years at Rusk, and even put together a band while incarcerated. The Missing Links contained Roky plus two murderers and a rapist. Released from the institution in 1974, Roky found his legend had grown while he'd been away - not least because 'You're Gonna Miss Me' was included on 1972's _Nuggets_ compilation. He formed a band, the Aliens, and set about honing a hard rock sound that placed the psychedelic garage blues of the Elevators firmly in the last decade. Though it was produced at a time when Roky was struggling to cope with drugs and life on the outside, he hit form on his first post Elevators album-proper, 1981's _The Evil One_. Produced over a period of two years by Stu Cook, from Creedence Clearwater Revival, it's a masterful collection of songs about zombies, demons, vampires and, yes, even the 'Creature With The Atom Brain'. These tracks, inspired by schlock sci-fi and horror movies and colored by Roky's distinctive, high-pitched vocal and squealing guitar, are among the maverick performer's best. At the time, Roky explained the album this way: 'It's gonna go back to the ferocious kind of rock 'n' roll of the Kinks, the Who and the Yardbirds. It's the kind of music that makes you wish you were playing it or listening to it for the first time 'way back when. ' But the record would not reach the mass audience of those bands, it's success hampered by erratic release schedules and disastrously awkward press interviews. A year after it's release, Erickson would become convinced that a Martian had inhabited his body. He would soon become obsessed with mail, and take to taping it, unopened, to his bedroom walls. Many of Erickson's demons were yet to show their faces. But the B-movie demons he exorcised on this record gave us one of hard rock's strangest, most inventive albums.

Various Artists - Horn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves 1968-1974 [Import]

Various Artists - Horn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves 1968-1974 [Import]

Regular price $ 28.00
/
1968 was the year when rock music went back to it's roots. Many cite Dylan & the Band and their search for a mythical America, but for others it was a return to the jazz, soul and rhythm & blues they had grown up with and that first got them into music. "Horn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves" explores these escapes from psychedelia in a 17-track compilation that stretches geographically from New Jersey to San Francisco, and on down to Memphis and New Orleans as rock once again became danceable. Horn Rock traditionally refers to the jazz style of big band-arranged rock associated with the likes of Blood, Sweat & Tears (who are featured with 'Roller Coaster') and Chicago, music that showed the influence of jazz on the post-war children who became rock stars in the 1960s. It's clearly there with Al Kooper's take on Hayes & Porter's 'Toe Hold', San Francisco's The Sons with their de la Soul-sampled 'Boomp, Boomp, Chomp', Chase's frenetic 'Run Back To Mama', Lighthouse's Acid Jazz floor-filler 'One Fine Morning' and Donnie Brooks' previously unreleased 'Blow Your Mind'. Others looked to the touring R&B bands for their influence. This was most obvious in the Memphis-recorded Delaney & Bonnie's 'It's Been A Long Time Coming', and the bands that emerged from Bill Graham's San Francisco label; Cold Blood, Tower Of Power and Hammer. The last of those replaced the horns with guitars and organ, as did the East Coast's Crystal Mansion. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and his alumnus Mike Bloomfield in the Electric Flag embraced horns after starting out as pioneers of electric guitar. "Horn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves" embraces an era and a sound that is often overlooked for self-consciously heavier and hipper sounds. These records are today sampled for their good grooves, and championed by DJs of retro sounds for their dancefloor adaptability.

Fleet Foxes - Shore [INDIE EXCLUSIVE] [Crystal Clear Vinyl]

Regular price $ 24.00
/

Fleet Foxes will release their fourth studio album entitled SHORE, a collection of 15 new songs, on February 5, 2021 on double-gatefold 2LP vinyl and CD.

Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold shares, "SHORE feels like a relief, like you'd feel when your feet finally hit sand after getting caught in a riptide. It's a celebration of life in the face of death, honoring our lost musical heroes, from David Berman to John Prine to Judee Sill to Bill Withers, embracing the joy and solace they brought to our lives and honoring their memory. SHORE is an object levitating between the magnetic fields of the past and the future." SHORE was released digitally in it's entirety on the fall equinox (9/22) alongside an album length Super-16mm landscape film captured and edited in Washington State by the filmmaker Kersti Jan Werdal. The album was recorded in upstate New York at Aaron Dessner's Long Pond Studio, in Paris at Studios St. Germain, in Los Angeles at the legendary Vox, in Long Island City at Diamond Mine, and New York City's Electric Lady. Fleet Foxes' self-titled debut made a profound impact on the international musical landscape, earning them Uncut's first ever Music Award Prize and a spot in Rolling Stone's 100 Best Albums of the 2000's. The follow-up album Helplessness Blues was met with the same critical praise as it's predecessor (MOJO, Pitchfork's Best New Music) and earned them a GRAMMY nomination. Both Fleet Foxes and Helplessness Blues are certified Gold in the US. The band's third studio album Crack-Up, released in 2017, charted #9 on the Billboard Top 200. Fleet Foxes have sold over 2 million records in the US. Large vinyl fanbase with over 50% of their sales coming from physical configurations.

Arlo Parks - Collapsed On Sunbeams (Deep Red Vinyl)

Regular price $ 24.00
/

Limited deep red colored vinyl LP pressing. Includes poster. 2021 release, the debut album from the British singer/songwriter. Twenty-year-old, London-based musician and poet Arlo Parks, has been very steadily climbing the ranks as an artist to watch since the release of her confessional debut single "Cola" in 2018. Arlo has received praise from artists such as Billie Eilish, Wyclef Jean, Clairo, Florence Welsh and Phoebe Bridgers during the past year while growing her fan base exponentially. Arlo's debut album "is a series of vignettes and intimate portraits surrounding my adolescence and the people that shaped it. It is rooted in storytelling and nostalgia - I want it to feel both universal and hyper specific." On a personal level, Parks struggled with her identity growing up; a self- confessed tom-boy who was super sensitive and "uncool," she says it was like "I'm a black kid who can't dance for shit, listens to emo music and currently has a crush on some girl in my Spanish class." By the time she reached 17, she shaved her head, figured out she was bisexual and produced/wrote an album's worth of material.

Between the power pop melodies of early Saves the Day and the hard driving folk rhythms of Fleetwood Mac lies Tigers Jaw, a band who's raw immediacy is infectious and intoxicating. Shimmering organ textures, chunky guitar chords, and male/female vocal harmonies show the Scranton, PA natives taking rural rock music from it's legendary past to it's vibrant future. Tigers Jaw have a profound musical purity that is as equally stirring in a basement of 40 people as it is in a club of 1,000. Margaret Chavez - Into An Atmosphere

Margaret Chavez - Into An Atmosphere

Regular price $ 24.00
/

Released by State Fair Records

Margaret Chavez's new folk-rock opus, Into An Atmosphere, is a headphone masterpiece. From the very first track, it's clear why Consequence of Sound, Mojo and Uncut have all been extolling the many virtues of project mastermind Marcus William Striplin - the music is undeniably ambitious, mixing Latin freak-folk rhythms with a topicality the micro-genre has never dared to approach, even in it's heyday. But to call this record folk or even folk rock would be to curtail it's progressive ethos, as Striplin weaves reverb-soaked guitars, undulating synths, and effervescent acoustic plucks to create what Uncut calls "a mark of excellence in Americana."

Striplin's barbed wit rises to the forefront, riding his gentle croon and lilting sonics past the kind of cliches that often accompany albums of such deep pathos and political awareness. Mixing elements of modern indie rock, psychedelia, mid-2000s alt-country, and folk, Striplin croons over layers of chiming acoustics and burbling electronics, building his songs from comforting lullabies into the kind of cathartic anthems upon which Echo & the Bunnymen and The Cure built their careers. Now that Striplin has finally put some of his demons to rest, he's been able to channel that catharsis into this new album, a work of focused anger and empathetic heart. Borne of internal conflict and depicting America's analogous struggles, Into An Atmosphere speaks of hope, something the songwriter himself bashfully cops to: "I think it's no coincidence it's being released in an election year."

The Texas Gentlemen - Floor It! [Indie Exclusive] [Colored Vinyl]

Regular price $ 28.00
/

Released by New West Records 2020

While the Gentlemen’s sound is clearly steeped in the classic roots, rock and pop music of the ‘60s and ‘70s, there’s a dreamy (the lilting “Sing Me to Sleep”), spacey (“Skyway Streetcar”) and occasionally progressive (“Dark at the End of the Tunnel”) element to what they do that seems to detach the music from belonging to any particular place and time. Add in elements of funk, soul, country, r&b, southern rock, gospel and essentially any other style that catches their musically omnivorous ears; an expansive and detailed approach to arrangement that sees the songs adorned with all manner of horns, strings and heavenly background vocals (“Hard Road”) and you have a collection of tunes that is more than just a mere album. Rather, Floor It!!! is a rich and righteous ride.

"This jammy rock group came out with a very original record that captures the feeling of drinking beers and hanging with your buddies in the backyard of Texas. I love that the inside is a board game. We've sold this record overseas to Australia and I think it's highly underrated" - Kate Siamro (Spinster Records)

Strange Trails is the second studio album by indie rock band Lord Huron. It was released by PIAS Recordings on April 7, 2015, in the United Kingdom, and by Iamsound the next day in the United States. The album received positive reviews from music critics, and charted in Belgium, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.

Rachel Brodsky of Spin called the album "enchanting from start to finish", praising the lyricism, vocals, and instrumentation. Abby Johnston of the Austin Chronicle wrote "If a pair of 2010 EPs approximated an untamed jungle and 2012's debut LP Lonesome Dreams a tree house amongst it, Lord Huron's sophomore full-length Strange Trails is Ben Schneider's completed bungalow, his little plot of land in lush wilds". Matt Conner of Under the Radar singled out "Meet Me in the Woods" as "undeniably Schneider's best work yet", and praised it overall as "always beautiful" and "arresting"
