Though the lyrics to it's big hit, 'F*k You,' were decidedly not something you would hear on a classic soul record, in many ways Cee Lo Green's 2010 album The Lady Killer was something of a love letter to old school R&B, complete with strings, horns, and a meaty bottom end. And Green's flawless yet impassioned vocals proved him a worthy successor to such legends as Gaye, Mayfield, and Redding. But perhaps the biggest miracle about this record was that, despite having a half dozen producers, The Lady Killer remained unmistakably 100% Cee Lo Green, larger than life and with it's heart on it's sleeve. For it's vinyl debut (that's right, this Top Ten record never came out on LP), we're pressing it up on hot pink wax and including an inner sleeve with lyrics. One of the 21st century's essential soul albums, now on vinyl where it belongs!

Sunny Ozuna is a living legend and a man worthy of praise on many levels. In the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than Sunny is. He became a star right out of high school in the late '50s and hasn't looked back in the seven decades since. Among countless other honors and notable achievements, Sunny was the first Latino artist to appear on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" (in 1963). He penned "Smile Now, Cry Later," a hit for him and The Sunliners, which along with the theater masks that grace the album's cover, became staples in the Chicano Soul and Lowrider Soul cultures.

We have been fans of Sunny & The Sunliners' music for a long time. We first got in touch with Sunny to try to reissue some of his records in 2013 but we didn't sign a deal until 2015. It took a trip to San Antonio and then two years of steady phone calls before they decided "if you have been chasing us for this long, you must be serious." With Sunny's blessing we started getting everything mastered, scanned, and planned. First we released 2017's Mr Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 1 compilation that put rare 7" sides next to some of his biggest hits and mixed in some choice album cuts for good measure. In the wake of that, we released three of Sunny's full lengths with their original track lists and art: Smile Now, Cry Later, Little Brown Eyed Soul, and The Missing Link - all of which were Record Store Day releases that raised money for the victims of 2017's Hurricane Harvey. For the 7" collectors, we reissued five 45s, making some very hard to come by sides widely available again and pressing some tunes on the format for the first time. In 2020, as an homage to Sunny, we released Dear Sunny... a compilation of Big Crown artists covering Sunny & The Sunliners songs. Through all of this we were able to do what we set out to do: get Sunny's music to a new audience of people and make it all accessible and available again to his existing fanbase. Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a teenager. His music and the music that it directly influenced are seeing a resurgence in popularity in the last few years. With any luck at all, our efforts played some small part in that, and on that note, we present Mr Brown Eyed Soul Vol. 2 - another compilation curated by us, where we dig a little deeper into Sunny's catalog and pull some lesser known gems that hold court with his hits. Hats off again to Mr Brown Eyed Soul himself, San Antonio's own, Sunny Ozuna, we are sure you will enjoy the music.

Los Angeles based band, Los Lobos, have always been inspired by their surroundings and the place they call home. With Native Sons the band set out to showcase all of these influences with their own take on the songs of Los Angeles from some of the cities greatest songwriters. Raised on classic reggae and soul, The Lions have carved out a distinct style that has earned them praise from reggae enthusiasts around the world. The 12-man ensemble, fronted by the sweet falsetto of Malik Moore, Hepcat's Alex Désert and DJ stylings of Black Shakespeare, the charismatic cousin of Robbie Shakespeare (of Sly & Robbie fame), released their album This Generation last year on Stones Throw. Enter Tom Chasteen, the main man behind Los Angeles' legendary Dub Club. Chasteen who worked his dubbed out magic into 8 tracks from This Generation, to create This Generation in Dub. Describing the process, Chasteen says, "The mixing was done rapid fire, bringing up each track on the mixing board, dialing in the sounds and then dubbing it live in real time while it's fresh. This record is not 'remixed' in the modern sense, but 'dubbed' in the classic Jamaican manner: adding some percussion and vocals, but basically leaving the tracks as they are and deconstructing them with echo and reverb." Chasteen adds, "The Los Angeles Reggae scene is really lively right now and this record is a cool meeting of the minds between artists who love the golden era of 70s Reggae. It was a blast dubbing The Lions record because there was so much to work with: beautiful harmony vocals, tough bass lines, sweet horn arrangements, and musical vibes that you can't get out of a laptop."

A product of North Memphis' segregated Dixie Homes housing complex, The Sweet & Innocent arrived during the Soulsville U.S.A. renaissance in the early '70s. While Al Bell was busy across town turning Stax into a national Black powerhouse, Ron and Sari Bledsoe's short-lived Active imprint operated out of a storefront on Chelsea Avenue, using nearby Manassas High as a talent pool. Rubye James and Linda Royston-Sweet & Innocent-joined a roster that included The Epics, First Company, and The Memphis Mustangs, groups all lost to the tide of time. The Sweet & Innocent's are a rare blend of atmospheric blues, post-Beehive girl group harmony, and Jacksons-inspired kid soul. "Spin it one time for me," Ron Bledsoe penned on promo copies of their January 1972 burner "Cry Love." Let's spin it again.

SPECIAL NIGHT There are a few terms that get thrown around loosely, two of which are legend and retro-soul. One of these fits Lee Fields hand and glove, one of these doesn't fit at all. Very few people in music have both earned the status of legendary and continue to solidify it. 50 years in the game and only getting better, gaining more fans, and evolving his sound on each album, Lee is in fact a Living Legend. This brings us to the misuse of the term "retro soul" when talking about Mr. Fields. You don't have to look far to find a younger generation emulating the essence and styles of an era they've only experienced through music and movies. It seems unfair to tag Lee with a term that implies imitation when he is part of the generation that actually defined the genre. Plain and simple, this is not that. "Special Night" is a master class in soul music past and present.

Back in 2016, producer Seth Applebaum released two EPs that marked the inauguration of the band Ghost Funk Orchestra. 'Night Walker' and 'Death Waltz' were conceived as one-man-band, reel-to-reel tape recorded experiments that would bring together elements of all the sounds that Seth most adored at the time: tape-saturated drums, gratuitous spring reverb, surfy guitar, Latin-style percussion, odd time signatures, and Spanish-language female vocals. Initially released only in the digital domain and on a short run of cassette tapes, these two EPs that defined the early era of GFO are now finally available together on a single LP via Colemine Records. The tracks have been lovingly remastered by Doug Krebs. We invite you to take a dive into the humble beginnings of a project that has continued to grow, shape shift, and accrue new and exciting sounds for it's sonic palette.

    An outrageous Rhythm & Blues singer whose spectacular performances ripped up Toronto " the Good " in the early to late 1960's largely overlooked by the music historians during an era that saw the city give birth to better known as the musical springboard of Neil Young, Joni Mitchel, Ian & Sylvia, Gordon Lightfoot, The Paupers, Steppenwolf, The Band, (and yes) Ricky James among many others. Originally a female impersonator, Jackie Shane, born & raised in Nashville Tenn., toured the "Chitlin' Circuit" opening for performers like Etta James. A chance encounter at Montreal's Esquire Show Bar circa 1962 landed Jackie the lead vocalist spot with Washington, DC's R'n B Jazz outfit Frank Motley & The Motley Crew. Motley & Crew had found the promised land in Toronto, Canada, their new home base and they had now found a sensational front " man ". Jackie Shane's 1st recording of William Bell's " Any Other Way " released regionally on Boston's Cookin' Label and Nationally on the Sue label landed the #2 spot on Toronto's mighty CHUM Radio Chart in the spring of 1963. It remained in the charts for 20 weeks!

"This album came out of wanting to make music that reminds people how beautiful life is and how delicate their heart is," he said. "I've always wanted to make music that is healing, comforting, and funky. I named the album Jardín hoping for it to create a space for healing when people put it on. "A garden is full of life, growth and beauty," Gabriel said of choosing that unifying image as the title for his new album. "It makes me think of green and white and all the colors as they appear in different flowers." That vivid spectrum bursts forth on Jardín itself and the album contains references to fruit of all sorts, sour mango, juicy tangerines and sweet peaches. From the heartache and aching vocals that float over the dusty drums of "Crawl" to the stutter-step thump of "Bombo Fabrika" to the high falsetto he nails on "Octave," Garzón-Montano proves himself to already be one of 2017's biggest breakout talents.

    2020 release. Cyan is the third full length album from San Francisco Bay Area-based band The Seshen. Taking it's name from a color that is both strong and soft, the LP unravels the progression that has been made since 2016's Flames And Figures, both as a band and as individuals. Led by exposed yet bold musical endeavours from bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara, the album sees The Seshen delve into uncharted eclectic realms. Anchored by Lalin's sly, silvery vocals (which draw frequent comparisons to Erykah Badu) and cerebral yet playful rhythms from producer-bassist Aki, The Seshen's music pulls from a deep well of electronic influences, R&B, and indie rock. Drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboard/synth player Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman and sequencer Kumar Butler make the music three-dimensional, blending live and digital instrumentation for a mercurial, transportive sound. Since 2012, the Seshen's live show has earned them critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase on multiple continents, as they've shared stages with the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, Petite Noir, tUnE-yArDs, and Thundercat.
