Aesop Rock - Appleseed

Aesop Rock - Appleseed

Regular price $ 24.00
/

On limited Clear & Black Smoke vinyl. The explosion of indie Hip Hop labels in the early 90s resulted in an ongoing snowball effect that started to shift the narrative around an artist's need to sign to a major label. Coincidentally, quality home recording equipment was also becoming more easily accessible and, with the rising popularity of CD-R technology, this allowed artists to write, record, and manufacture their own albums right at home.

Appleseed was a highly celebrated and influential release from that era, cementing Aesop Rock as a new face whose talent could not be denied. The album explores creative concepts with inventive writing and stripped-down yet melodic and melancholic production. Six out of the eight songs were produced by Aesop Rock, with Omega One producing "Sick Friend" and longtime collaborator Blockhead handling "1000 Deaths", and the project's sole guest lyricist was Dose One. The DIY process was followed in every aspect, as Aesop himself recalls, "I did the Appleseed hand style while working at Tepper Galleries in NYC. The cover was made at Kinko's. The first Appleseed CD's were CD-R's I duped at home and sold from my backpack at an MF DOOM show at Brownies, which was right below my apartment at the time. I continued to sell hand to hand in NY, while Blockhead started fielding some mail orders from a young internet. People would send us cash or a check, and he'd cut the covers out and mail them off." The two of them were able to move a couple thousand CDs that way before turning their attention to newer projects, particularly Float in Aesop's case. As a result, Appleseed went out of print for many years before resurfacing as a merch item on tour. However, in all that time it was only available on CD, directly from Aesop. Finally, 21 years after it's debut, Appleseed officially returns, now available on all digital platforms, as well as on vinyl for the first time!

Guilty Simpson & Dixon Hill - Actus Reus

Regular price $ 24.00

'The sonic template of this album came from Dixon Hill's lifetime of crate digging, parsing 100's of hours of courtroom audio, and carefully arranged instrumentation. The lyrics are given life in the mind, pen, and voice of a legendary Detroit rap king. Guilty Simpson and Dixon Hill bring an unmatched work ethic to their music, resulting in a tightly packed meta-hardcore rap opus. The record also features a dream collaboration with Lil' Fame of MOP and Kool G Rap. The LP includes the entire 'Actus Reus' project on side A, and all instrumentals on side B. Dixon Hill had spent years prior honing his craft as multiinstrumentalist and avid record collector. Dixon Hill creates beats with grit and heart, resulting in dense musical textures evoking his idols, Pete Rock, Large Professor and Dilla. Guilty Simpson, A stalwart of the Detroit underground Hip-Hop scene, Guilty Simpson has lent his voice to classic productions from the likes of J Dilla, Madlib, and Apollo Brown. His candor and lyrical dexterity are well known and respected. Guilty's lyrics span from grief stricken lamentations to vitriolic attacks tightly packed into 7 bump-worthy tracks on 'Actus Reus'. Detroit's native son is a true threat on the mic, and he makes it clear on this project.

Jaylib - Champion Sound

Jaylib - Champion Sound

Regular price $ 32.00
/
In 2003, J Dilla was better known as Jay Dee, a Detroit producer who shunned publicity but was widely respected in hip-hop; Madlib was an up-and-coming L.A. producer making a name for himself with his wild diversity, from rap (Quasimoto) to electronic jazz (Yesterdays New Quintet) to remixes (Shades of Blue, Blue Note-2003). At the time of Champion Sound's original release in late 2003, J Dilla and Madlib had never been photographed together or appeared as a group in public. In the years that followed, this changed drastically - after Dilla's move to Los Angeles, the two worked together, communicated through hip-hop beat tapes, and toured together as Jaylib. Madlib's profile rose with his MF DOOM-collab Madvillain (soundscan 93k). J Dilla, though dealing with a serious illness, continued crafting material for artists such as Common and Busta Rhymes while working on a wealth of solo material. Dilla's final albums - Donuts (Stones Throw-2006), The Shining (BBE-2006) - along with the re-issue of Ruff Draft (Stones Throw-2007) have introduced his name and music to countless new fans while publications from The Source to Rolling Stone paid respect to his musical genius.

KAYTRANADA - 99.9%

Regular price $ 40.00
/
Vinyl LP pressing. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and raised in the city of Montreal, 23 year-old Canadian artist KAYTRANADA is widely regarded as one of the most important new producers in the musical landscape today. Since the age of fourteen, when he first began to DJ and when his brother introduced him to music production software, his output has been relentless. As he explains, "after he showed me the basics, from that day on I couldn't stop making beats," pumping out a beat a day for the next couple of years and soon after self-releasing a series of EPs and beat tapes that quickly began to expand his reach. Single releases like "Drive Me Crazy" with Vic Mensa and "Leave Me Alone" with Shay Lia soon spread his name like wildfire and gained listens reaching far into the millions. In addition to that he's produced for artists such as Mobb Deep, Kali Uchis, Freddie Gibbs, The Internet, & Talib Kweli and remixed the likes of Disclosure, Pharrell, Missy Elliot, Janet Jackson, and others. KAYTRANADA soon cemented his reputation and his sound; an undeniable swing of the drums comparable to J Dilla's, a signature soulful touch in the melodies, and a healthy dose of funky bass lines. Last year he was tapped by the legendary Rick Rubin who has acted as a mentor, eventually signing him to a publishing relationship. 99.9% will be KAYTRANADA's first debut album on XL Recordings. The 15-track album includes guest vocals from Anderson.Paak, AlunaGeorge, BADBADNOTGOOD, Craig David, Syd, Little Dragon, Goldlink and more.

Khruangbin - Mordechai Remixes

Khruangbin - Mordechai Remixes

Regular price $ 28.00

"The dancer wants to get in a groove and stay there until he has exhausted his invention or his body. The timescale and momentum of any physical activity is vastly different from the attention span of listening."

Albert Goldman "A good remix is when the remixer's sonic fingerprint is present, without sounding forced. It should feel like it's own story, with at least some of the same characters as the original." Khruangbin The art of the remix has been around for several decades, from the fervid imaginations of JA pioneers like Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid or King Tubby to the disco enthusiasts of New York, such as Tom Moulton, who bequeathed us the modern iteration of the remix and provided a template from which most remixers still work. Moulton's first commercial remix, a reworking of BT Express' appropriately-named 'Do It 'Till You're Satisfied', which stretched it from three minutes to a luxurious five, assisted the band in securing it's first Billboard R&B Number One, as well as providing a pathway for remixers like Walter Gibbons, Larry Levan, Richie Rivera and Tee Scott, to completely reinvent the concept of a remix (and in some instances, deconstructing the idea of what comprised a song). It has subsequently been used as a marketing tool, a dancefloor-devastator, a gimmick (both cheap and expensive) or even as a way of reaching a different audience (think Tori Amos' 'Professional Widow'). Khruangbin are no slouches when it comes to the remix themselves. They've been reworked before, in 2016, with the highly collectible EP on Boogiefuturo. But this time, they're taking it a step further with an album dedicated to the art. Entering the tight-knit world of a Khruangbin song can be a little daunting. They have created this entire universe in which the trio seem to function telepathically in the way the music is composed, arranged and played. To mess with their delicate eco-system can invoke feelings similar to that of an unwanted guest crashing a good-time party. "We write our music to be interpreted; this is another wonderful interpretation of the music," reassure Khruangbin. "There is something very vulnerable about letting others work on your music. But through the correspondence with the different artists, we gained a bigger connection to the songs themselves." The choice of remixers for this album is neither arbitrary nor accidental. They're not names picked randomly out of a hat or chosen via a throw of the dice. All have some connection to the band, sometimes personal friendships, musical connections, or simply mutual musical appreciation. Harvey Sutherland and Ginger Roots have both toured with the band, Kadhja Bonet and Ron Trent had their own mutual fan club going on, Knxwledge sampled 'White Gloves' on a recent mixtape, Natasha Diggs and Soul Clap's Eli's are recent buddy-ups, Quantic is a mutual friend of Bonobo (crucial in the KB origin story), while I've known Laura for number of years; plus she is also godmother to one of Felix Dickinson's kids. Doesn't get much more intimate than that, right? Some of these remixes were specifically made so you can dance your ass off while getting down to the Khruangbin sound, while some might better be appreciated horizontally with headphones on, wearing fashionably loose clothes. The choice is yours. But all were made with love and respect for Khruangbin. "A good remix deconstructs, recontextualizes, or simply extends a good time," say the band. Amen and out. Bill Brewster

Mac Miller - Circles (Clear Vinyl + Poster)

Mac Miller - Circles (Clear Vinyl + Poster)

Regular price $ 40.00
/

Double clear vinyl LP pressing with 12-panel poster-folder.

Circles is the sixth and final studio album by Mac Miller. Conceived as a sister album to 2018's full length Swimming, the album was completed with the assistance of Jon Brion, with whom Miller worked on Swimming and had been working together on Circles at the time of his passing. While sonically distinctly different than it's predecessor, Circles features many of the hallmarks for which Swimming was critically-acclaimed upon it's release - Miller further realizing his singing voice in addition to rapping, live instrumentation and earnest, confessional lyrical content. Listeners will hear shades of some of the album's influences in it's songs, from the T-Rex guitar tone of "Surf" to the Plastic Ono Band-era John Lennon feel of it's production and the inspired cover of Arthur Lee's 1972 single "Everybody's Gotta Live." It's a momentous final entry into the discography of an artist that remains at the center of reimagining the limits of rap.

"Madvillainy, one of the most anticipated releases in underground rap history, happens to parallel one of the most anticipated arrivals in comic book history: the short-lived Amalgam Comics label. As the name implied, the Amalgam Universe brought together the two most dominant and popular comic factions-- Marvel and DC-- and all of their respective characters, styles and quirks. The long-awaited collaboration between producer/emcees Madlib and MF Doom, Madvillainy is the Infinity Gauntlet of rap, a tense mainstream-meets-indie, avant-meets-antique melee that, as the opening sample suggests, plays on a "seminal connection that audiences can relate their experience in life with the villains and their dastardly doings."

MF DOOM and Madlib are Madvillain. The two met in 2002 and soon began working on Madvillainy which would be finished over the next year and released in March 2004. The music on Madvillainy went against the grain of all popular conventions in contemporary hip-hop: short songs, dirty sound, no choruses, and with lyrical themes which were not always clear to everyone on first listen. The album received the highest critical praise of a hip-hop album released in 2004, and years later has continued to generate interest and controversy. This modern classic, while previously available only in a plain sleeve, is given the proper treatment of a full color jacket.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - IC-01 HANOI

Regular price $ 24.00

While recording Unknown Mortal Orchestra's latest release, Sex & Food, Ruban Nielson, his longtime collaborator Jacob Portrait and his brother Kody Nielson, found themselves in the Vietnamese city of Hanoi playing and recording with local musicians at Phu Sa Studios. The studio, normally used for traditional Vietnamese music, found the band jamming on sessions dubbed IC-01 Hanoi: exploring the outer edges of the band's influences in jazz, fusion and the avant-garde. The musicians, along with Ruban and Kody's father, a jazz musician in his own right, helped lay down the unique textures heard throughout Hanoi. At it's core it's a record of exploration, finding it's closest antecedent in Miles Davis' experimental On The Corner - itself a record full of nods toward avant-garde composers and jazz outsiders alike. Hanoi finds Ruban amplifying and stretching out on lead guitar, with a blown-out and wandering fuzz tone that slinks throughout the sessions. Kody and Jacob match Ruban's melodic diversions with aplomb, mining their talents to finding as easy a role in the fusion of funk as they do in the more ambient and abstract tangents.

What We Drew is Yaeji's first full-length release, and entirely self-produced, but she's careful to classify it as a mixtape, which belies the way that these songs came together. 'Each track is almost like a snippet of my life, a look into my diary or something, where it's reflective of how I was specifically feeling during that time.'
