As a composer and performer, Bonfá was at heart an exponent of the bold, lyrical, lushly orchestrated, and emotionally charged samba-canção style that predated the arrival of João Gilberto's more refined and subdued bossa nova style. Presented here is one of his greatest albums, Plays and Sings Bossa Nova, on which he collaborates with such stars as Leo Wright, Oscar Castro Neves and Lalo Schifrin. This superb release includes Bonfá's classic version of his tune "Manhã de Carnaval" (aka "Black Orpheus"), among many other highlights.
