Southern soul sizzlers from Nashville!

Some serious swagger emerged on Shelby S. Singleton’s SSS International label, including the funk-soaked, Allen Toussaint-penned “There’s A Break In The Road,” Mickey Murray’s relentless “Sticky Sue,” Bettye LaVette’s standout revival of “Piece Of My Heart,” and more sensational workouts! Cut by Kevin Gray and pressed on gold vinyl at Third Man Pressing!

Inaugurated in 1967, the Nashville-based SSS International label’s wide-ranging catalog encompassed pop, country and rock, as well as a particularly strong soul roster, releasing a slew of terrific platters through the early ‘70s. In addition to producing hits for his Nashville-based label, Singleton also had an uncanny knack for picking up other splendid masters—Betty Harris and Robert Parker were produced in New Orleans, while Mickey Murray, Sam Dees, and Clifford Curry contributed stunning sides to the fertile catalog from other soul capitals. Activity at SSS International wound down after the new decade commenced, but we can certainly be glad he devoted so much quality time to this slamming southern soul.
